Dear friends and peers from all of life’s stages (San Diego, Los Angeles, DC, and Ann Arbor), dear doctors of tomorrow, dear mentors that I look up to, and dear anyone else that sees this,
Today I have started a hunger strike – no food, just water/electrolytes – to raise awareness on the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, and to fundraise against the engineered starvation of Gaza. I am of sound mind, as much as one can be at this time. I am blessed with good mental and physical health to be able to safely do this for as long as I can.
I wrote a report of what’s happening in Gaza - the rampant starvation, the death tolls, the attacks on healthcare, the children in anguish. My sources cited, of course. Then I deleted it. And while usually I would like to sit down and write something profound to share with you all, deleting and retyping word after word in the hopes that you and I will find that thread that connects us all – I feel as though I have run out of things to say. There are no combinations of sentences, decibels of screams, or frequencies of sound that can capture the suffering in our world. My purpose in life has always been to bring people together. I hope that we can come together for this. I frankly do not care what your political beliefs are, nor your patriotic stances, nor your nationality, nor your ethnicity. You are human, and so am I.
I am calling to the part of you, the little you that lives in the first layer above the brainstem, the part of you that developed after you stopped being something else and became a human being but before all the other layers tried to convince you that this is the way things are. I am calling to the part of you that winces and gasps and automatically reaches out a hand when someone stumbles and falls in front of you. I am calling for a little bit of change in a horrible world – a drop in a bucket that is so negligible in the grand scheme of justice that it can’t even afford being a token of symbol. But still, I want to call, and I want you to answer. Can we just let people eat?
Please donate and/or share with others.
More details:
To anyone willing to donate and share, I am Faisal Alshamaa and I live in Michigan. I will be going on Hunger Strike starting 9/22/2025 to help fundraise for Gaza Soup Kitchen and to raise awareness on the Stage 5 Famine in Gaza.
Gaza Soup Kitchen has been on the ground providing food for women, children, and men during the Stage 5 Famine and mass starvation of Gazans. Most of their locations have been destroyed, except for the two still running. Please help me raise funds by donating or sharing (so I can eat again, yay!)
Your contributions will directly support:
- Providing hot, nourishing meals to families in need.
- Maintaining soup kitchen operations.
"Little by little, a little becomes a lot"
If we reach our fundraising goal of $10,000, I will additionally donate $1,000 to support non-profits in Tigray, Sudan, and Congo.
