On Sunday, December 2nd, a small caravan of lawyers, clergy and advocates from Charlottesville will travel to Tijuana, Mexico to provide assistance to those who are seeking asylum in the United States. We will assist migrants in understanding their legal rights as well as provide any humanitarian assistance needed.
We've already raised funds to cover our travel costs, but we hope to raise $10,000 for direct assistance while we are at the border. These funds will allow us to provide material assistance (food, diapers, socks, medicine, etc.) to asylum seekers. Any funds leftover will go directly to groups doing direct care at the border, like Al Otro Lado, or will fund another humanitarian care delegation.
These asylum-seekers are desperate to live and we commit to do everything in our power to assist them.

The individuals, families and unaccompanied children who are seeking asylum, now numbering close to 7,000 with more arriving each day, are hopeful to enter the United States through the San Ysidro Port of Entry, but very few have been granted access. The mayor of Tijuana has declared a humanitarian crisis. Over 6,100 asylum seekers have taken shelter in the Benito Juarez Sports Complex, which has become unsanitary and is well over capacity.
Due to unlivable conditions, inaccessibility and desperation, some families and individuals seeking asylum attempted to enter into the United States by walking across the border at an area close to the port of entry. They were assaulted with tear gas and were forced to flee.
This humanitarian crisis will continue to escalate. Stay tuned for more ways to help.
