It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic passing of Coach Huggy, a man who was far more than a coach. For over 30 years, Huggy gave his heart to the game and to the people within it. He worked tirelessly with juniors and was a huge advocate for women’s basketball, creating spaces where everyone felt welcomed, supported and valued. Whether you were new to the game or deeply invested in it, Huggy met you with the same passion, care and belief.
The Harrow Club was the heart of it all. It was there where it all started, where Huggy's community was created, built and grew. A space that became more than just a basketball court, it was home, Huggy’s home. Monday, Fridays and Saturdays were the days to be at the Harrow Club. His sessions often didn’t end when training finished…people would stay behind sitting, standing and talking with Huggy. Sharing stories, seeking advice and laughing together. No one ever felt rushed to leave, often taking several attempts at goodbyes before we finally headed home. There was something truly special about Huggy’s presence and his sessions. It was never just about basketball.
If you ever attended one of Huggy’s sessions, you’ll remember the music first. There was always music playing, setting the tone and bringing people together (on and off the court). You’d often catch him dancing on the sidelines (sometimes even on court mid game!), joking with players, keeping spirits high and bringing his signature style and energy to every session. His fashion sense and music taste were as memorable as his coaching. All uniquely Huggy.
In the summertime, Ravenscourt park became Huggy’s second home. You could always find him there, surrounded by the juniors he coached, or the adults he used to coach many moons ago. It was where long days turned into lasting memories. For many, those summer days, along with the rest of the year with Huggy became some of their most cherished memories that shaped not just their basketball journey, but ultimately, who they became as people.
Huggy was also selfless with his time. He showed up, he listened. He supported people whenever they needed it, not just on the court. He had a rare gift for lifting others, always ready with a laugh, a joke or words of encouragement when someone needed it the most. A safe space with zero judgment. He shaped the lives of many young people by instilling confidence, belief and purpose. West London basketball would not be what it is today without him.
Beyond basketball, Huggy was truly of the community. You would always find him in the area. If you were out with him, it didn’t take long before someone spotted him, stopping to say hello, share a story, or show love. He was known, respected and deeply loved by people from all walks of life.
This fundraiser is about legacy. It is about ensuring that the values Coach Huggy lived by (unity, love, passion, discipline and community) continue to thrive in the basketball community he dedicated his entire life to.
