Hudad School & Water System Fund

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Walt Cannon. I am a retired Engineer from Seattle, Washington. Some local friends of mine and I recently traveled to the Hudad plateau, outside of Lalibela, in the northern Ethiopian highlands. We joined a small group of Australians to help them with their on-going project, of the last three, years to build a rural school and associated water supply system. The trip was a life changer for me and I am committed to returning to help see the Project through to completion.

 THE COMMUNITY

The Hudad community consists of around 100 families. They are subsistence farmers, living without electricity or running water. Since a population boom last century, the landscape can no longer support their farming techniques. They go hungry for several months each year. The children have no access to education, as the nearest town, Lalibela, is a three hour walk on a small track inaccessible by vehicles.

THE PROJECT

The project has designed and is building a school to provide education and training to children and adults. A sustainable water project will also bring drinking water to the site. Children, now in a temporary shed, are being taught the National Ethiopian Curriculum for Grades 1 to 8. Land management training, reforestation and farming initiatives are enabling the community to restore the landscape and improve productivity to gain food security. Income from surplus produce will generate diverse opportunities & ongoing development.

Our joint Ethiopian / Australian / US build team made tremendous progress on both the school building and the water system. We have planned another trip back in October of this year and hope to get the building closed in and water pumped from the remote reservoir to the community school site.

As you can imagine, funding for such a small direct action group is our greatest challenge, We have the skills we need to be successful and much of the investment has already been made. We need funds for the remaining materials for the school...cement and sand have to be carried by donkey or human for a number of kilometers. Additionally, we need roofing materials and some stonework completed on the school water reservoir.

All of our fund raising to date has been first hand person to person, and that is the model we are continuing to pursue. All funds raised through this site are going directly to Project expenses.

Please help this worthy, direct action, effort at any financial level you can afford. Additionally, please forward this link to any other individuals or institutions that may be interested.

Regards,

Walt Cannon
