Hucu Da Esperança
Donation protected
Hi everyone, it’s Jona here! As you might know I’m back in Mozambique, working with the orphanage Sao Gabriel da Esperanca. Back in 2013, I spent one year working with them and thanks to donations, we were able to build a maize mill, which is still running today!!

So with time on my hands, and thanks to the support of my good friend and counterpart Sr. Joao, we’ve decided to take on another project.

But what project do I hear you say? Well, it’s become apparent that the orphanage needs and wants a poultry farm. And why poultry? Well, the kids and staff at Sao Gabriel da Esperanca agree on the following:
- Source of Income: The orphanage will be able to breed and sell poultry, meaning the orphanage will be better equipped to sustain itself
- Source of Employment: Presents a job opportunity for the kids (giving them the opportunity to pay for their education)
- Source of Food: Provides a source of protein for the orphanage
- Farming Experience: Gives the kids at Sao Gabriel da Esperanca farming experience
We’ve spent a lot of time learning from chicken farms in the region to ensure that what we’re setting up incorporates all the appropriate farming methods. The fundraising ambition is based on the quote we’ve received - we’ve got a construction company lined-up who’s willing to donate their time to support which is great news.
We have made plans for a 8m x 4m building with 8 x 20m enclosure, which will supply enough space for a feasible poultry farm, while ensuring species-appropriate breeding conditions.

We want to make sure that just like the maize mill, the building will withstand tropical weather conditions, as well as any termites or bugs prone to eating wooden constructions. We’re aiming for something like this:

All funds received will go directly to the project and we’ll of course share progress as we go. If we go over target, rest asured your donation will be greatly appreciated, for an extension of the poultry farm, a rennovation of the maize mill or simply to buy additional mosquito nets for the kids. If you have any questions on the project, then please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re all really looking forward to getting started here in Chimoio, so thanks for all your support!
