Help Rebuild the Hancock Point Pier

The pier at Hancock Point, which is owned by the Hancock Village Improvement Society (HPVIS) and has been there for longer than most of us can remember, was completely demolished by a major storm in January. This is the second year in a row that the pier has been affected by extreme weather events, which are becoming more and more common.

Last year, money was raised to repair a section of the pier that was damaged. This year, the entire pier was lost and will need to be rebuilt. HPVIS has signed contracts for replacement of the pier, totaling about $200,000. The goal of this replacement project is to provide a new pier system that will be higher off the water and better able to withstand major storms, as well as be removable when needed.

The dock is the key piece of infrastructure supporting a harbor that is beloved by the greater Hancock Community. It harbors a handful of local fishermen (some of whom we all get our lobsters from directly), houses the sailing program which teaches dozens of kids and teenagers to sail every year, and is utilized by recreational local and transient boaters throughout the summer. Without this pier, the harbor is limited in its ability to meet the needs of the community.

Support is needed from the community to return the harbor to the wonderful, community building place it has always been.
