On April 4, 2018, a beautiful baby girl named Sophia was born. Her entrance into the world was sudden and unexpected.
In May 2018 Sophia was admitted to the hospital for failure to thrive. She was having difficultly swallowing which made her unable to gain any weight. Then came a 11 day hospital stay. The doctors discovered then that upon swallowing Sophia was aspirating. Lots of medical issues were discovered and lots of testing and treatments were needed. At the end of the hospital stay Sophia left with a G-tube and ordered to not take anything by mouth and list of doctors to follow up with. She was diagnosed with Pallister Hall Syndrome.
So far Sophia has had 9 surgeries and has gone under anesthesia a total of 12 times. She will be having more surgeries, procedures, and testing. Sophia was awarded supplemental Medicaid in March 2019, which helps cover the co-pays. Not everything Sophia needs is covered by insurance. Sophia’s medical care takes 2 people full-time. Philip and Stephanie have trained themselves and took on Sophia’s medical care themselves, take her to appointments, drive her to different doctors out of town and have paid as much of Sophia’s medical care that they could. Unfortunately there are still outstanding medical bills that need to be paid. Sophia’s future will include care by many doctors and the rest is unknown. Unfortunately because Sophia’s genetic syndrome is so rare she isn’t on a list of qualifying conditions, therefore they were left to care for Sophia themselves.
Anything donated can help them to continue to care for Sophia and will provide a little less financial stress on them. Thank you all so much.
