Community, We Need Your Help!
Our Story:
We are a household of four Black, Latinx, and Filipino queer and trans people who have been struggling since the beginning of shelter-in-place orders due to COVID-19. Our household has either been laid off or put out of work due to their place of work closing. Half of our household is also immunocompromised, asthmatic and suffers from chronic pain.
We live on Treasure Island. A truly special place in the Bay Area that is inhabited by mostly low-income Black and brown families. We do not have the same protections as San Francisco renters as Treasure Island is still technically Federal property and is owned by a redevelopment company. Our rent management is uncertain of our protections as San Francisco’s rent moratorium is ending June 30th.
In February, we received notice of a rent increase. We were able to pay increased March rent but were uncertain on how to pay April rent. As the end of March came, only one person in our home was working. He was later laid off.
Only half of us received stimulus checks that was put towards groceries and household necessities for the house. That alone could not sustain all four of us.
Two members of our household still have jobs but are not receiving current income as one place of work is closed and unsure of how to reopen due to COVID-19. The other is severely immunocompromised and cannot risk going back to work that is a high-contact essential business.
For the two of us without work, we have applied for unemployment and have yet to hear anything back. Unfortunately this is the reality for so many others in similar situations as us.
We owe exactly $7568.74 in rent from the months of April-June. We will owe another $2514 on July 1st.
It is difficult to ask for this. We are all finding ways to make an income and are actively looking for work.
We are raising $10,000 for the months of rent that we owe as well as for next month (July).
Please consider supporting our household as we truly love our home and have found so much safety in it. Our friends and family know how much our home means to us.
Any additional funding raised will be sent to Black queer and trans people who are also facing immediate financial insecurity.
Thank you.
