Emergency Housing for Waltham Asylum Seeker
Donation protected
Meet my friend M.B. from Uganda. He’s currently seeking political asylum in the U.S., and he's struggling to afford local housing. Though he’s well educated and has many skills, he isn’t eligible to work here legally until he receives his work authorization in the spring. He’s also disabled and uses a wheelchair, which severely limits the number of affordable accommodations.
This crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise enough funds to cover M.B.’s housing expenses in a safe, wheelchair-accessible space through the winter and early spring (November through March). Once his work authorization goes through, he’ll be able to support himself on his own.
I first met M.B. over the summer when he was living in our neighborhood as a temporary boarder. But for the past two months, he’s been staying at the Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter in Boston (the men’s shelter in Waltham is not wheelchair accessible). Every day, he commutes by bus and manual wheelchair from Boston to Waltham to meet with his lawyer and other service providers. This commute will prove difficult, if not impossible, once the ice and snow pile up.
I’m hoping our wonderfully diverse and inclusive community can come together to raise the funds to help M.B. secure a safe, stable place to live here in Waltham during this difficult transition. Feel free to share this campaign with friends, family, churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide to a good man in need!
