In today's housing crisis, it has become nearly impossible for working people to afford a home without the privilege of intergenerational wealth and assets. This has only exacerbated the growing divide between the haves and the have-nots. Yet, safe and secure shelter is a basic human right that we all deserve.
House You is a grassroots movement born out of the "Fix The Housing Crisis" rally in September 2023, dedicated to getting everybody housed. We build resilient community networks, share resources, and promote holistic housing solutions that can be implemented by citizens, communities and governments.
The Byron Shire on unceded Bundjalung country has more rough sleepers than the entire city of Sydney, despite having just one-seventh the population. For those living unhoused or in housing insecurity, the lack of stable shelter often leads to devastating mental and physical health consequences. Studies show people who were homeless die an average of 22 to 33 years younger than those who are housed (Knaus 2024). Providing everyone with a permanent home will save lives and enable all a proper chance to thrive.
In fact, we already have enough land and existing dwellings to house every citizen, without needing to construct a single new home. By redistributing the housing stock more equitably, we could ensure that everyone has access to their own home. There's enough to distribute either 2 adults per home or a family with kids per home.
While working towards public housing for all, House You also promotes the creation of emergency villages to provide our most vulnerable community members with basic amenities like communal kitchens, bathrooms, showers, recreation areas, healing spaces, food forests, and laundry facilities.
House You is at the forefront of the housing-first movement, campaigning for public housing, community-led initiatives for housing justice, hosting housing actions and events, supporting social (public and community) housing tenants 1:1, engaging with all levels of government to make change and empowering communities to be key decision-makers in the development of land and housing planning in our regions. We will not rest until housing is not for profit and everybody has a permanent home.
If you can donate even $5 that would mean so much to our team. We are all volunteers and the money goes directly towards our campaign costs, advocacy, community outreach and support work. Donate now to support House You in our mission to get everybody a house.
