On any given day, there are 34,000 people in immigration detention. Here in Wilmington Immigration Attorneys helping families are struggling. Many work unpaid overtime to help with basic needs, running errands, and gathering simple paperwork. Often mothers and children are not able to get legal help, simply because they do not have transportation.
Hosting Hope is simple a place where people who want to help can be connected with these families through area Immigration Law Firms. There are three ways you can help.
Host
Host are paired with a family member (normally a mother or teenage/young adult) for 2-3 weeks. During this time you will help with a list given to you by an Attorney and coordinate with the family member to locate the items. This will require a valid driver's licence and transportation. A few hours of going to places to get records, drive them to legal meetings, or group meetings will be part of the assistance. You will also work with our group to get the family basic needs.
School Liaisons
Often getting in school or help navigating our school system is difficult. When teenagers or those who had extensive absences try to get back into school, obtain GEDs, or try to change schools because of changes in circumstances it is difficult. We need people familiar with New Hanover Schools to help these families get through the paperwork of enrolling or other issues.
Blessing Bags
If you would like to help with blessing bags, you will assist in collecting a list of items and putting them together in bags for our HH families. These include phone cards, food, toiletries, etc. These items will be given to both the families and those in detention centers.
All money collected will go to help with blessing bags, items the families need, and gas/phone cards for attorneys working Pro-Bono on pending cases.
