Why the fundraiser for Chris?
Chris is a loving father and treasured member of the Coffey family. Apart from being giving the great fortune of having me as a little brother, he is facing a significant challenge this year. He seeks to move into Independent Housing that will help him manage his progressive disability and best support his family whilst facing significant financial barriers.
What is Chris facing?
Chris was diagnosed with a neurological condition in 2021 which effects his eyes (for which he is now legally blind), as well as balance, speech and coordination. Following a series of tests, he had to stop work in 2023, which has significantly changed his and his family's life. He can no longer drive and many of the things he loved to do outdoors, he is no longer able to do.
His 2 children, who are both of school age, have have been significantly effected by these changes. They are committed to being a nurturing family despite other challenges.
It is likely that independent living with home help provided by 2 Personal Assistants is appropriate to manage his physical disability whilst maintaining the need to live independently.
How will the funds help?
He is currently claiming a number of unemployment and disability benefits, receiving funding from social services which pays for home help. He is pretty good at accessing state funding where possible, however there are a number of things not eligible.
These include:
• Legal costs not covered under legal aid E.g. wills and lasting power of attorney. Approximate costs may be between $3000-4000
• Potential start-up costs not covered under grants, like buying white goods or household items.
• He plans for half of the funds to go towards rent for accommodation on a temporary basis until he can find a more long term sustainable and affordable home. He desires to live near the kids whilst managing his disability with measured independence.
Hence the need to raise funds!
Chris, his family and us Aussie Coffeys thank you so much for your support. It makes a real difference!
