Hi, my name is Andrea, and today I am reaching out for help on behalf of my dear friends Andrés, María, and their baby Samuel.

Life can change in a heartbeat. One day you are celebrating milestones, watching your baby grow, making plans for the future… and the next day everything shifts. We never imagine that someone we love will be the person needing help, until suddenly, they are.

Andrés and María migrated from Colombia to Perth around 11 years ago (separately as they met here). Their journey wasn’t easy. They faced visa challenges, had to leave Australia for a few years, worked hard, and started over more than once. Yet their perseverance paid off; they became Permanent Residents, achieved work-related goals, and welcomed their baby boy Samuel this January.

This year was supposed to be one of joy and new beginnings. Andrés had just started a new job he was excited about, and María transitioned into independent work after becoming a mum.

But everything changed painfully fast.

Andrés recently started experiencing worrying symptoms. After multiple tests, he received a diagnosis that no one is ever prepared for:

Stage IV colon cancer.

The cancer has spread to his bones, bronchi, and abdomen.

He is starting chemotherapy as soon as possible (he is currently recovering from a colostomy)

Adding to the emotional weight of this moment; Andrés is an only child. His mother, who traveled to Australia to help care for her grandson and enjoy her new role as a grandmother, is now living the unimaginable pain of watching her only son fight cancer. Having her here has been a blessing: she can help care for baby Samuel and accompany Andrés and María through every step of this process. Our hope is that she can remain in Australia throughout Andrés’ treatment, offering the support and presence only a mother can give.

María is self-employed, so she cannot claim any paid leave. Their expenses (rent, utilities, baby essentials, food, transportation, and medical costs) continue every day.

We want to remove the financial stress so they can focus on what truly matters:

Andrés’ treatment and caring for their beautiful 10-month-old baby, Samuel.

Anyone who has crossed paths with this family knows how special they are. They are the kind of people who show up for others with love, with faith, with open arms. They have touched many lives without ever asking for anything in return.

Andrés and I are both from Bucaramanga, Colombia, and became friends in 2010. My husband and I later migrated to Perth, and when Andrés considered moving to Australia, he chose Perth because he had us here. Shortly after moving, he met María (the love of his life), and from there our friendship turned into family. We have celebrated many Christmas, birthdays, New Year’s, and all of life’s milestones together.

La vida puede cambiar en un segundo. Un día estás celebrando sueños cumplidos, viendo crecer a tu bebé, haciendo planes para el futuro… y al siguiente, todo se detiene. Nunca pensamos que una persona que amamos será quien necesite ayuda, hasta que ocurre.

Andrés y María emigraron de Colombia a Perth hace aproximadamente 11 años. Su proceso no fue fácil. Enfrentaron retos con visas, tuvieron que salir de Australia por algunos años, trabajaron incansablemente y empezaron de cero más de una vez. Pero su esfuerzo dio frutos, lograron la residencia permanente y este enero dieron la bienvenida a su bebé Samuel.

Este año prometía ser uno de alegría y nuevos comienzos.

Andrés había empezado un nuevo trabajo que le ilusionaba, y María pasó de ser empleada a trabajar de forma independiente después de convertirse en mamá.

Pero todo cambió dolorosamente rápido.

Recientemente Andrés empezó a presentar síntomas preocupantes. Después de varios exámenes, en la primera semana de noviembre recibió un diagnóstico para el que nadie está preparado:

Cáncer de colon en etapa IV.

El cáncer se ha extendido a los huesos, los bronquios y el abdomen.

Andrés comenzará quimioterapia lo antes posible (cuando se recupere de la colostomía que le realizaron el 7 de noviembre).

A esto se suma una situación emocionalmente devastadora: Andrés es hijo único. Su mamá viajó a Australia para ayudar con el cuidado de su nieto y disfrutar esta nueva etapa como abuela, pero hoy está enfrentando el dolor más grande que puede tener una madre: ver a su único hijo enfermo. Tenerla aquí ha sido un apoyo invaluable, ella ayuda a cuidar al bebé Samuel y acompañar a Andrés y María en cada paso de este proceso. Nuestro deseo es que ella pueda quedarse durante todo el tratamiento, brindándoles el apoyo y la fuerza que solo una madre puede dar.

María es trabajadora independiente, y por lo tanto no está recibiendo licencia remunerada. Mientras tanto, los gastos continúan: renta, servicios, pañales y productos para el bebé, comida, transporte, y gastos médicos.

Queremos reducir su carga financiera para que puedan enfocarse únicamente en lo más importante:

el tratamiento de Andrés y el cuidado de su bebé Samuel, de tan solo 10 meses.

Quienes los conocen saben que son una familia excepcional. Son las personas que siempre ayudan, que siempre están presentes, que dan sin esperar nada a cambio. Han tocado la vida de muchos.
