Hop on the Peace Grain

Hi- my name is Leanne. I've been baking sourdough bread in my home as a side venture since 2014...what started as a therapeutic way for me to cope with the loss of my mom and connect with her, turned into a weekly endeavor baking loaves of bread for friends and family. I have been baking for them almost every week since then.

I have always been an altruistic person – my professional experience has been in the non-profit world helping direct garden produce to local food pantries and coordinating domestic and international volunteer opportunities for students in higher education. When I started baking, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back to the local community. In 2021, I started Peace Grain...it is a way for me to bake the world a better place by baking organic sourdough loaves and offering them for free to anyone in need of a nutritious loaf of bread. Currently, I am able to offer about 12 mini loaves at a time since I only have a small kitchen oven and it limits the amount of bread I can bake and share. There aren’t a lot of affordable oven options for the home baker that allows you to bake more than 4 loaves at a time. 

Recently, an opportunity arose to pre-order a cottage bakery size oven from the UK through a US baking supply company. I have been eyeing up this oven for a while. It has 3 stone decks, temperature control knobs for each deck and can handle steam much like the ovens in a real bakery. The result is beautiful crusty sourdough loaves...and the opportunity to bake way more than I could in my home oven! This is the first time this oven is being shipped to the US, so I immediately jumped at the opportunity to reserve one  even though I wasn't sure how I was going to pay for it (remember, I work for a non-profit!)  I’m not one to ask for help for something like this, but I really can’t make this happen without the help of others. This oven will allow me to bake more bread for those in need and hopefully expand my baking to reach more people.

I have until Aug 5th to raise the money needed to secure the oven or it will go to someone on a waiting list. It's been my dream to bake bread for more people and to also offer free loaves of bread to either food pantries, homeless shelters or anyone who is unable to access a loaf of organic bread.
