At a time when the Spanish language and Latin American culture are under threat in the United States, the volunteers at Centro Cultural Barco de Papel NY are asking for your support. Our community bookstore is the last of its kind in New York City, offering new, used, and rare books exclusively in Spanish, as well as a vital space for readings, performances, and other cultural events.
Located on the corner of 80th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, we serve a community of readers who are immigrants from every country in the Americas. People come to Barco de Papel to rebuild the libraries they left behind when they came to the United States. Parents come to Barco de Papel to give their children the joy of reading in a second or even third language. And we are a rare “third space” for artists and passionate readers in the most ethnically and linguistically diverse neighborhood in the country.
Following the tragic death of our founder, Ramon Caraballo, in December 2025, Barco de Papel has been run exclusively by volunteers and its executive director, Paula Ortiz. Now, we are faced with the challenge of keeping our doors open, while also reinventing ourselves to better serve the community during these drastically challenging times. We are humbly asking for your support in this project.
With your help, we will be able to cover the following expenses:
- Hiring a part-time store manager to operate the space while our executive director Paula works her day job as a middle school teacher in the Bronx.
- Install a more energy-efficient and cost-efficient HVAC system
- Utilities
- Offer all events to the community without suggested donations
- Water-damage repair
- Complete the long-awaited project of renovating the store’s facade as designed by architects from NHDM Architects, 82nd Street Partnership, and Van Alen Institute

En un momento en que el español y la cultura latinoamericana están en riesgo en los Estados Unidos, los voluntarios del Centro Cultural Barco de Papel pedimos su apoyo. Nuestra librería comunitaria es la última de este tipo en la ciudad de Nueva York: un lugar donde se encuentra un inventario de libros nuevos, usados y raros completamente en español, además de un espacio vital para lecturas, recitales y otros eventos culturales.
Ubicados en la esquina de la calle 80 y Roosevelt Avenue, en el corazón de Queens, servimos a una comunidad de lectores inmigrantes de todos los países del continente americano. Mucha gente llega a Barco de Papel para rellenar las bibliotecas que dejaron atrás cuando migraron a los Estados Unidos. Padres y madres vienen para darles a sus hijos la oportunidad de leer en un segundo o incluso tercer idioma. Y también ofrecemos un “tercer espacio” para artistas y lectores apasionados en el barrio más diverso de todo el país.
Tras la lamentable muerte de nuestro fundador, Ramón Caraballo, en diciembre de 2025, Barco de Papel ha sido sostenido exclusivamente por sus voluntarios y por su directora ejecutiva, Paula Ortiz. Ahora enfrentamos el reto de mantener nuestras puertas abiertas y, al mismo tiempo, reinventarnos para servir mejor a la comunidad en estos tiempos tan difíciles. Con profundo respeto, te pedimos tu apoyo para este proyecto.
Con tu ayuda podríamos cubrir gastos como:
- Contratar a un/a gerente de la librería (de medio tiempo) para abrir y atender el espacio mientras nuestra directora ejecutiva, Paula, trabaja en su empleo diario como maestra de secundaria en el Bronx.
- Instalar un sistema de calefacción y aire acondicionado más eficiente y económico
- Financiar gastos (luz, gas, etc.)
- Ofrecer todos nuestros eventos a la comunidad sin sugerir donaciones
- Realizar mantenimiento a las tuberías de agua
- Completar el proyecto tan esperado de renovar la fachada de la librería, diseñado por arquitectos del Van Alen Institute
