UPDATE: Jose's family shared the following message that they wanted the community to receive.
"On behalf of the family Carcamo and especially on behalf of Jose Elias Carcamo's mother Maria Angela Ramirez , we would like to thank [the community] for their help during this difficult time of losing our friend and brother, Jose Carcamo. With the help provided by the [community] and the creation of the GoFundMe, the goal was reached. We thank all the donors, many of whom did not know us, who donated to the cause. The remains of Jose Elias Carcamo have been repatriated to his hometown in El Salvador. Thank you very much, and may God bless you and your families."
Our community experienced an unimaginable tragedy last weekend when our neighbor, José Cárcamo, was killed by stray gunfire while in his home in Columbia Heights. His family is devastated by this loss and our whole neighborhood is mourning in solidarity.
José was known as a noble, hard-working man, the eldest of two brothers. He worked in construction here in the District and was in the process of building his mom a house in their home country of El Salvador.
It is impossible to understand senseless acts that lead to this type of loss, all we can do is come together as a community and show support for José's family and support authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. I have been in contact with the family and have offered to try to raise funds to support them at this difficult time. Many neighbors are wondering what they can do to help, and considering making a donation is one small way that we can come together and show what type of community we live in and how we take care of each other.
If you are able, please consider making a donation. Our whole neighborhood has the Cárcamo family in its thoughts and prayers.
José's niece, Jacinta, is the beneficiary of this fundraiser so that she can make sure the family can access these resources.
