The Albaugh McGovern American Legion Post 42 is named for the first two men from Ankeny, Iowa, to die in World War I. Our mission is to advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.
Post 42 is fortunate to own a building which is in the center of the Uptown Ankeny district. Despite its central location, the building itself is a rather nondescript gray rectangular concrete block structure. The longest wall faces west toward the High Trestle bicycle trail and a new business area.
We propose to complete a patriotic mural that will become an eye-catching symbol of the Uptown area. The professionally designed painting will be a dramatic 65' long and 13' tall. The main focus will be the silhouette of a soldier kneeling with their rifle as they honor a fallen comrade. American, Iowan, and Legion flags waving in the breeze will be included in the mural.
The project is meant to inspire patriotism at a time when it is sorely needed. In a country where only 1% of the population serves in the military, it is important to have reminders of their sacrifices.
