On Thursday at the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 229, a frightening and deeply disturbing incident unfolded at Reyna’s fruit stand.
According to witnesses, Reyna was subjected to a racially motivated attack by a man who repeatedly yelled hateful remarks, including “Go back to Mexico,” “You’re illegal,” and “You’re not allowed here.” The suspect allegedly destroyed much of Reyna’s fruit stand, causing significant damage to the small business she has worked so hard to build.
The situation escalated when the man reportedly struck Reyna’s husband with his e-bike while openly carrying a handgun. Witnesses say the firearm was used in a threatening manner during the confrontation, leaving Reyna and her family fearing for their safety.
That is when Darryl Blanchard stepped in.
Darryl had simply stopped to buy fruit when he noticed the stand had been destroyed. Reyna pointed out the attacker, and without hesitation Darryl placed himself between the suspect and Reyna’s family. Knowing the man was armed, Darryl chose to stand up for people he had never met, putting his own safety at risk to protect others.
His actions helped de-escalate the situation and eventually the suspect left the area. Darryl remained with Reyna and her family until law enforcement arrived.
When video of the incident was shared online, it quickly spread across social media, reaching more than 4 million views. Thousands of people have flooded the comment sections with messages of gratitude and support for Darryl’s courage. Many have offered to buy him a meal, send money, or simply thank him for doing what was right when others may have walked away.
What many people do not know is that Darryl faces health challenges of his own. He lives with heart and blood pressure issues and struggles with chronic knee problems. Following the confrontation, he returned home feeling shaken and checked his blood pressure because he was not feeling well after the stress of the incident. Thankfully, he is doing okay.
Today, Darryl is in California helping care for his 85-year-old father as he recovers from surgery.
This fundraiser is an opportunity for our community and the millions of people who have been inspired by Darryl’s actions to give back to a man who showed extraordinary courage, compassion, and selflessness. He did not step forward expecting recognition or reward. He simply saw people in need and chose to help.
Any support, whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping us recognize a man whose bravery reminded us all what it means to stand up for others.
