In Loving Memory of Mosai (Sai) Nelson: Supporting Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
My son, my first born, my beautiful baby boy Mosai (Sai) Morris Nelson tragically died by suicide on March 16, 2024, a few months shy of his 25th birthday.
Smart, handsome, and charismatic, Mosai was often the go-to for sound advice, an empathetic ear, and a guaranteed laugh. Impacted by generational trauma on both family and community, Mosai battled with mental illness and substance use, engaging in a multitude of supportive services and therapies since adolescent years. As a young adult, Mosai became a strong advocate for mental wellness and in his final days was as active member of a Youth Advisory Board focused on informing policy and services catered to LGBTQ community. He showed deep compassion for people he loved his community and the Earth. His words often echoed a profound desire to make a positive impact on the world.
"I want to do only what will be positive and peace-bringing for friends, family, both known and unknown, alive and yet to be born. I want to have the power to shape the minds of the next generation of this planet for the better, and greater enlightenment toward harmony with Mother Earth." - Sai Nelson
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Mosai’s life, and his passion and dedication to mental wellness, we are asking his community of family, friends, peers and colleagues to continue to amplify his message by raising funds to Adopt-A-Bench and Plant/Sponsor a Tree in his name. Both will be ideally located where young people congregate, serving as a space of wellness and reflection and providing a communal area of solace and support. Proceeds from this campaign will go directly to the NYC Parks department to cover the costs and maintenance of the bench and tree installation.
"I want to share my knowledge through carefully crafted curriculum, taught in a setting accepting of all people who wish to leave a positive mark on the world." – Sai Nelson
Suicide is the second leading form of death amongst young people between the ages of 15-24.
Any additional funds collected will be allocated towards creating a memorial fund, dedicated to furthering mental health awareness and suicide prevention efforts, with a specific focus on supporting black and brown boys aged 15-24 in Bushwick/Bed-Stuy/Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
If you or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide please call 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
On behalf of our family, thank you to all who have reached out in support at this difficult time. Memorial and Dedication to follow in June 2024 in celebration of Mosai’s 25th Birthday.
