Nick Bavas began his career in law enforcement in 1993 at the 44th Precinct in the Bronx upon completing the police academy. He later transferred to the Bronx Evidence Collection Team and eventually joined the Crime Scene Unit in 2001
A dedicated and decorated crime scene detective, Nick officially began working in crime scene investigations in 2002. He was highly regarded for his expertise in ballistics, courtroom testimony, and forensic photography. He selflessly volunteered his time—both on duty and off—to assist in the recovery efforts following the 9/11 attacks, a commitment that would impact his health for many years.
In January 2015, Nick made the selfless decision to retire in order to care for his newborn daughter, Charlotte, who was born prematurely, weighing just one pound. His wife, Faith, had nearly lost her life during childbirth due to a severe condition called preeclampsia. Without hesitation, Nick stepped up—becoming the steady, devoted presence his family needed during that critical time.
Charlotte is now 10 years old, and she always knew her dad was a hero. He was her protector, her teacher, and her greatest supporter. To Faith, he was a devoted and loving husband. To everyone who knew him, Nick was a gentle giant with a huge sense of humor—a big teddy bear with a heart of gold. He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, who never said no to anyone, and who went out of his way to help others in any way he could.
He also had a special love for animals. Over the years, Nick rescued and cared for many, giving each one a home filled with love. His home was never without animals—dogs, parrots, turtles and even a few more exotic pets—each one a reflection of his kind and compassionate spirit.
Recently, Nick and his family took a meaningful trip to Greece to visit loved ones and show Charlotte and his wife the place where he was born. It was especially significant for Nick—it was his first time returning since he had left as a child.
Unexpectedly, on the morning of June 28th, Nick lost his long and courageous battle with the 9/11-related illnesses he had fought for years, leaving those who loved him heartbroken that he left this earth too soon.
Nick is survived by his loving wife Faith, his daughter Charlotte, his sister Penny Bavas, and his brother Jimmy Bavas, along with his sister-in-law Alyson and his nephews Michael, Aidan, and James. His legacy is one of love, sacrifice, strength, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, his community, and the people he served.
Please help his family with funeral and medical expenses. The family had to perform two autopsies and arrange for transport Nick to the United States. His wife and daughter also have no health insurance. Nicks pension was their only source of income. They family would appreciate any donation to help the through this difficult time.
