Honor Huntington's and Gateway's Underground Railroad Legacy
Donation protected
Mr. Duggan's high school civics class has been researching the Underground Railroad, as well as the local area's positive role in its history, as part of this year's civics project. Their end goal is to collaborate with school and community leaders, as well as community members, to secure approval and funding for a marker on the Gateway grounds, honoring the role that this property and the surrounding area played in the system that helped enslaved people find freedom in the North. This civic action is being undertaken to evoke and reinforce civic pride in our local history and in the values and principles that underlay the Underground Railroad. We are attempting to raise at least $650 from the local and school community to obtain a plaque for the Gateway grounds stating,
"Littleville Elementary and Gateway Regional School are believed to be located on land that once served as and supported a “station” on the Underground Railroad, which offered aid and hiding places to fugitive slaves along the Westfield River route northward. The Gateway Regional School District was named to honor this place and its role as a "gateway to freedom,” continuing its legacy to be a “gateway” to greater knowledge, better education, and a brighter future for all."
Any support will be much appreciated as we work to acknowledge the important and positive role played by the town of Huntington in the Underground Railroad.
