Honor Forgotten Ancestors at Weems Plantation

Henry County is home to the largest slave burial site on the Southeast. It’s home to 184 formerly enslaved persons. As monumental as this is, there is no signage or real memorial for these resting souls.

Do you know where your ancestors are buried? What if you found out they were laying to rest in neighborhoods, unmarked, littered with trash and given no dignity or respect?

That’s exactly what we uncovered while doing a search of the Weems Plantation located in Luella, GA.

An unmarked, wooded area that houses 184 bodies.

Only a small, torn sign, deep in the woods will tell you who lies here. No dignity, no honor, not even a single mention of who survived but take a ride down the street and the Weems slave owners are on display for all to see and pay respects to. Fancied up with headstones and names to recognize those people who once lived here.

It’s our mission to bring respect and peace to our resting ancestors! Help us bring awareness to this cause!

A clean up, signage and much more are needed. The graves are sinking in and people walk through and litter this area with trash!

We’ve launched a Non-Profit called Honor Thy Roots Cemetery Preservation Inc. in efforts to restore slave burial sites all over the country!
