Ed Dillman passed away peacefully on October 22. To those wishing to make a donation in his honor, his family requests contributions to fund a program that was near and dear to his heart. Those close to Ed knew one of his favorite summer activities was volunteering at Maritime Adventures in Scituate Massachusetts, an innovative specialized camp that provides skill-building experiences in water sports for children and young adults with and without disabilities. He and his wife Susan loved volunteering alongside their family, supporting such an impactful and meaningful experience. Ed's daughter, who lives in Scituate, brought the program to her seaside community and manages it every summer, his three grandchildren have been participants and have now progressed to roles in teaching and supporting the newer participants. Ed felt tremendous joy watching participants enjoy the experience of a lifetime – arriving day one nervous to try new skills and successfully accomplishing triumphs gliding across the harbor by the end of the week.
This program has been running for 15 years and serves 96 participants every summer who learn sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and paddle-boarding. Many of the students with disabilities who participate have never had the opportunity to experience these activities on the water. Each participant, no matter his or her challenges, has demonstrated the ability to successfully access meaningful lifelong memories at Maritime Adventures. The camp has been a collaboration between the Scituate Recreation Department, CORSE Foundation (Community of Resources for Special Education) and is run by expert instructors with specialized equipment from AccesSport America, a national, non-profit that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities.
