Honor Dorothy Wheeler with a LVH Park Bench

Donation protected
Friends of Dorothy Wheeler would like to honor her with a bench at Lake View Hill Park. While serving on the County Board, Dorothy led the effort to rezone and designate Lake View Hill as a Dane County Park, saving the land from planned development. We hope to be able to show Dorothy her bench this spring. The bench will overlook Lake Mendota in the park Dorothy helped establish. A Dane County Park bench with flagstone footrest, plaque and installation costs $4000. Will you help us meet our goal?

A longtime Madison resident, Dorothy has touched many lives in positive ways through her service on the County Board from 2004 to 2010, and her long career as a teacher in Madison public schools.  An environmental advocate, Dorothy was on the boards of the Friends of Lake View Hill Park and the Friends of Cherokee Marsh for many years, and was an active member of the League of Women Voters.

Lake View Hill Park encompasses the grounds of the former Lake View Sanatorium, established in 1930 for treating patients with tuberculosis. In 2006, thanks in large part to Dorothy’s advocacy, Dane County designated all 48 acres surrounding this historic site as a park.

The park has 42 acres of woodland and meadow, hiking trails, views of Lake Mendota, and interpretive displays detailing the history of the sanitorium and those who lived and worked there. The park is located at 1202 Northport Drive and includes the highest point on Madison’s Northside.

Established in 2005, the Friends of Lake View Hill Park organize and convene activities year-round including ecological restoration work projects, educational events, and seasonal events with the Lake View Neighborhood Association. The Friends have developed partnerships with area schools, scout troops, faith organizations, and youth groups. Dorothy Wheeler served as an advisor to the Friends for many years.

If you prefer to write a check, please make it out to “Friends of Lake View Hill Park,” include “Dorothy Wheeler” in the memo line, and mail to FOLVHP, PO Box 8813, Madison, WI 53708-8813.  Priscilla  Herman, treasurer of the Friends of Lake View Hill Park, is graciously managing the donations.
