A Bench for Carleen: Honoring a Life of Service

Carleen Reilly was the heart of her neighborhood — a dedicated volunteer, trusted voice, and steadfast friend. As a two-term member of the River Road Community Organization Board, she worked tirelessly to strengthen connections among neighbors and improve the community she loved.

Carleen believed deeply in showing up and speaking out. Whether she was helping guide local projects or thoughtfully engaging with city issues, she brought insight, integrity, and compassion to every effort. Her commitment inspired others to stay involved and make a difference.

In May 2024, the City Club of Eugene honored Carleen with the Turtle Award, recognizing individuals who “stick their necks out” to improve life for others. They remembered her as “the consummate citizen… the kind of person who holds our democracy together in difficult times.”

Now, friends and neighbors are raising funds to place a memorial park bench in Carleen’s honor near the River Road riverfront multi-use path at the end of Hillcrest Dr. - a place she cared about deeply. The all-metal bench (example photo below) will include a beautiful plaque celebrating her lifelong dedication to civic engagement and community service. The total project cost is $10,000, and your contribution will help make this lasting tribute a reality.

This bench will be a welcoming spot to pause, reflect, and remember Carleen — a woman whose service, spirit, and love for her neighborhood continue to inspire us all.
