My name is Suzie Blackstock, and I’m a longtime Brooklyn resident from Kingston, Jamaica. I bought a Victorian, three story house in Flatbush, Brooklyn in 2006, where I have lived and raised my 6 sons for 14 years. My home is at risk of foreclosure. I have worked with lawyers on this case for 5 years, and I now need to pay $700,000 to pay the bank back in full to stop the sale of my home.
I instantly fell in love with the house when I first saw the central, winding staircase, which looks like it never ends, like it goes to heaven (see the photo below!). I raised my sons in this house, ages 3, 12, 13, 16, 20, and 23. I am the President of the block association, and I own a local business, where I plan events and provide party rentals for family events. I am dependable, hard working, and care deeply about my neighbors, my family, and my home.
Not only does the threat of foreclosure pose a serious risk to my family to not have the safety and comfortability that our home provides, but it threatens the fabric of our neighborhood. My block is predominantly made up of family homes. We are an African American and Caribbean community, and most of us have lived on this block for many years. But I am seeing the neighborhood change rapidly, before my eyes. Homes are being bought and torn down by real estate developers to build apartments and condos that we cannot afford. I’m standing strong, and fighting for my house, and the neighborhood, where I’m raising my children.
