Help Nathan finish a dog park at Toro County Park

Donation protected
Nathan is a Life scout in Troop 60 (Spreckels, CA) and is working on finishing a community dog park at Toro County Park (free entrance) in Salinas, California before he turns 18 next month. This is a priority project for the community and county that, unfortunately, has been waiting almost 20 years to build. The funds raised will close the remaining gap between the $4500 he has already raised and the $6,000 he now needs to construct the project by mid-December.

Nathan stepped up and has been working for months to get the permitting and other approvals in place. But a dehabilitating illness for most of the year and delays by the county 1) put him behind his plan build date back in July and 2) have led to supply chain issues and material price increases.

Lastly, all was still on track until 3 weeks ago when the county chose to increase the park's size (usually a good thing, right?) by almost 40%.

That has left him short the $1,500 needed to cover the costs for the added fencing plus the equipment necessary to run underground water 150ft versus the original 30ft.

Your help in getting him through this is much appreciated.

As his Scoutmaster, I want to add personal input about Nathan. I have known and worked with him for four years now. While many scouts and teens generally do what is needed to meet requirements, Nathan has always sought leadership roles. He has served as a Patrol Leader three times and then spent a year as the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL). His time as SPL was in the middle of the pandemic and he was the glue that kept our unit functioning as a scout-led unit. Nathan worked diligently to get us back in person when other troops were satisfied with being virtual.

In December, he ages out of Scouting but will rejoin as the Assistant Scoutmaster for Junior Leader Development. I have never had an 18-year-old I entrust with that level of responsibility. Nathan has been hit was almost insurmountable delays, including illness, permitting and supply chain issues. He has been given chances to switch projects to simpler ones. But this dog park has been a passion for him for years now. I appreciate your consideration in reading this and hopefully donating.

Cheers,
Glenn
