We (Frida and Izzy) have been volunteering at a home for people with disabilities here in Sri Lanka. As amazing at it is to bring them some joy when we visit, the conditions they are living in are truly shocking.

The home has 58 residents from ages 5 to 67. Everybody here has a severe disability of some kind, some residents being perminantly paralysed. Many of them have lived there their whole lives, lots of them abandoned by their families. They have two carers who help to look after them but mostly they look after themselves. They sleep in small rooms with 10+ beds with no privacy. Their bathrooms aren’t even recognisable and are never cleaned. They have little to no electricity and sometimes don’t even get a meal if it can’t be afforded or if one hasn’t been donated. Not to mention the state of the room they call the kitchen. They entertain themselves with what they can, the highlight of their days being when we bring them biscuits and pens and paper to draw with them.

To improve the quality of life for these wonderful people, we are committed to raising £500. This money won’t change everything, but will buy them art supplies, upgrade their facilities and pay for a regular cleaner.
