Holly (Ba) T. Bird passed away suddenly on April 2nd from Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She only knew of her cancer for a few short weeks and had a clean mammogram a year ago.
Known widely as a advocate for justice, her death still ripples throughout the country.
The only thing more important to Holly (ba) than her work for water protection, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, murdered and missing indigenous women, and all others facing oppression, was – and is – her children. To know her, is to know that she was a fierce mama bear.
Holly(ba) leaves behind her three children: Sonny (22), Will (19), and Annabella (16), who now find themselves facing very real financial challenges.
Despite her esteemed career as a lawyer/judge, she devoted her time to pro bono work and served organizations in need.
Thankfully, she has left the kids their home where they will continue to live, a sanctuary filled with memories of love and support.
Sonny and Will are stepping into the workforce at the Good Bowl and Garden Goods, taking on responsibilities that will require them to mature quickly as they navigate insurance payments, utilities, and household expenses. It is a testament to their strength and resilience.
One of Holly(ba)'s final wishes was for Annabella to graduate from Interlochen Arts Academy, a dream that reflects her belief in the transformative power of art and education. While Annabella will receive a generous scholarship, the cost is still considerable. She also hoped for Will to continue his education at NMC, helping him pursue his aspirations. Sonny, while bearing the weight of maintaining their home, also has dreams of furthering his education.
Her children truly need our help. They have bright futures ahead, and your kindness will make a significant difference in their lives during this challenging time.
While family and friends are hunkering in to be sure their needs are met, we are reminded of Holly(ba)’s inclination to always widen the circle. We are, therefore, asking all who feel called to help ease the burden.
All funds raised will go DIRECTLY to supporting studies, health-related costs, and Sonny’s current focus on upkeep and repairs to the property which will support them all.
Once again, Chi Miigwech for the many manners in which you have all supported the family as we navigate this unimaginable loss.
Holly (Ba)'s children do need your help. Please help us carry on her strength through her children, whom she has taught well. All of them have bright futures.
