The recreation program for Teens, Young Adults, and Seniors with developmental disabilities in Huntington, NY, has been a source of joy and connection for dozens of individuals each week. Since 2022, I have had the privilege of directing this program, which offers music and art therapy, Bingo, bowling, and other social activities that help our members build friendships and confidence. The program was started by the Town of Huntington and has become a vital part of our community, providing a safe and welcoming space for those who need it most.
One of our most cherished traditions is the annual holiday party. However, in recent years, rising costs and the financial realities faced by many of our members—many of whom live in state-run houses—have made it harder for everyone to participate. Attendance has dropped, and the burden of paying for a venue, food, and drinks has become too much for some. This fundraiser aims to remove that barrier, so every member and the dedicated staff who support them can enjoy an stress-free night of fun, laughter, and togetherness. We are planning for 75-100 people at about $50/plate. If we are short, we will be able to offer the experience at a discounted rate and any additional funds will be put back into future events.
As the brother of an individual with special needs, I know how much these parties and dances mean to our members. Spending time with loved ones is something many people take for granted during the holidays, but for some of our individuals, this is the only family celebration they have. Your support will help us bring joy and belonging to those who need it most. Thank you for helping us make this holiday party a reality.
