Wij zijn Lara Kapps en Floor van Dommelen en voor onze Master Geneeskunde aan de Universiteit Maastricht, zullen wij de komende maanden onderzoek gaan doen in Ethiopië vanuit de Huisartsgeneeskunde hier in Maastricht voor onze master thesis
Naast onze bijdrage via deze onderzoeken willen wij ook op een andere vruchtbare manier een steentje bijdragen aan deze jongeren, vrouwen en gezinnen. We zullen het geld dat we inzamelen gebruiken om goederen te kopen en zoveel mogelijk gezinnen te voorzien.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
HIV blijft een belangrijk wereldwijd volksgezondheidsprobleem en heeft tot nu toe meer dan 40,4 miljoen levens geëist. Tegen het einde van 2022 waren er naar schatting 39,0 miljoen mensen die met HIV leefden, waarvan 2/3 in Afrikaanse regio's. In Ethiopië blijft HIV een grote last voor een groot deel van de bevolking. Hoewel antiretrovirale therapie (ART) heeft geholpen bij het verminderen van de morbiditeit en mortaliteit veroorzaakt door HIV, is het virus nog niet uitgeroeid. Mensen blijven elke dag de brute gevolgen ervan ondervinden, variërend van gezondheidsproblemen, zoals een grotere vatbaarheid voor het oplopen van andere ziekten, tot discriminatie en stigmatisering.
Het Onderzoek
We zullen elk deelnemen aan afzonderlijke onderzoeksprojecten. Het onderzoek van Floor zal zich richten op de epidemiologische determinanten van HIV bij jongeren. Het is essentieel om het gedrag en de psychosociale context, evenals het vermogen om antiretrovirale therapie (ART) te volgen, te beoordelen om langetermijnsucces te maximaliseren, behandelingssucces te voorkomen en de morbiditeit en mortaliteit door HIV te verminderen. Er is momenteel beperkt bewijs in Ethiopië over de verdeling van onderliggende determinanten van HIV-behandelingsresultaten bij adolescenten. We streven ernaar dat met dit onderzoek daar verandering in te brengen.
Lara's onderzoek zal zich richten op voorstadia van baarmoederhalskanker bij vrouwen die met HIV leven. Hoewel iedereen risico kan lopen op het ontwikkelen van baarmoederhalskanker, hebben vrouwen met HIV 6 keer meer kans om het te ontwikkelen in vergelijking met gezonde vrouwen, en hoewel het behandelbaar is, blijft invasieve baarmoederhalskanker een van de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken bij vrouwen die in landen met beperkte middelen wonen. Dit onderzoek zal daarom niet alleen streven naar het vinden van de prevalentie van vrouwen met HIV die ook voorstadia van baarmoederhalskanker hebben, maar zal ook proberen indicatoren te vinden voor slechte toegang tot gezondheidszorg, zoals de angst voor de diagnose, stigmatisering en discriminatie van familie en gemeenschap, enz.
Beide onderzoeken zullen bijdragen aan het onderzoek van onze PhD studenten aan de Universiteit van Hawassa: Habtemu Habu en Bikila Lencha, onder toezicht van onze begeleider aan de Universiteit Maastricht, Dr. Mark Spigt.
Waar Gaat het Geld Naartoe?
Het geld dat u doneert, zal volledig ten goede komen aan jongeren, moeders en gezinnen die getroffen zijn door de HIV-epidemie. HIV-patiënten in Ethiopië worden snel slachtoffer van HIV-gerelateerde stigmatisering en discriminatie, de angst voor familiale en/of sociale afwijzing, wat leidt tot een verhoogde prevalentie van mentale en gedragsproblemen, middelenmisbruik en onzekerheid met betrekking tot huisvesting, waaronder dakloosheid en instabiele woonomstandigheden.
We willen deze GoFundMe zo persoonlijk mogelijk maken en daarom willen we het aan de Ethiopiërs zelf over laten om ons te vertellen wat ze op dat moment het meest nodig hebben. Aangezien we in nauw contact zullen staan met HIV-patiënten, willen we persoonlijke gesprekken voeren over wat op dat moment het meest nodig is. Soms is er behoefte aan dekens, andere keren aan transport of voedsel. Het is echter alleen door persoonlijke gesprekken met deze patiënten en hun verzorgers ter plaatse dat we de beste beslissing kunnen nemen.

Hello everyone!
We are Lara Kapps and Floor van Dommelen and for our medicine master thesis at Maastricht University in The Netherlands, we will be conducting research regarding HIV in Shashemene, Ethiopia in the coming months. Besides our contribution through these studies, we also want to contribute to these young HIV patients, women, and families in another fruitful way. We will use the money we raise to buy goods and provide as many families as possible.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
HIV remains a major global public health issue having claimed over 40.4 million lives up until now. By the end of 2022 there was an estimated 39.0 million people living with HIV, 2/3 of whom are in African regions. In Ethiopia, HIV continues to burden big part of the population. Though the Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) has helped reduced the morbidity and mortality caused by HIV, it has not yet eradicated it. People continue to suffer its brutal consequences every day, which go from health problems, such as being more susceptible to acquiring other diseases, to suffering discrimination and stigmatization.
The Research
We will each participate in separate research projects. Floor's research will look at the epidemiological determinants of HIV among young people. It is essential for adolescents to assess the behavioral and psychosocial context as well as the ability to adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to maximize long-term success, prevent treatment failure and reduce morbidity and mortality by HIV. There is currently limited evidence in Ethiopia regarding the distribution of underlying determinants of HIV treatment outcomes in adolescents. We aim to change that with this study.
Lara's research will address pre-cancerous cervical lesions in women living with HIV. Though anyone can be at risk for developing cervical cancer, women with HIV are 6 times more likely to develop it when compared to healthy women, and although treatable, invasive cancer of the cervix continues to be one of the main causes of death among women living in resource limited countries. This study will therefore not only aim to find the prevalence of women living with HIV that also have pre-cancerous cervical lesions, but it will also strive to find indicators for poor access to health care, such as the fear of diagnosis, stigma and discrimination from the family and community, etc.
Both our research will go to complement the research of PhD students at Hawassa University: Habtemu Habu and Bikila Lencha, under the supervision of our supervisor at Maastricht Univeristy, Dr. Mark Spigt.
Where does the money go?
The money you donate will go entirely to adolescents, mothers, and families affected by the HIV epidemic. HIV patients in Ethiopia quickly fall victim to HIV-related stigma and discrimination, fear of familial and/or social rejection, causing these patients to experience an increased prevalence of mental and behavioral health problems, substance abuse, and housing insecurity, including homelessness and unstable living conditions.
We would like to make this fund raiser as personal as possible and for that reason we want to leave up to the Ethiopians themselves to tell us what it is they need the most. Since we will be in close contact with HIV patients, we would like to have face to face conversations about what is most needed at that moment. Sometimes there is need for blankets, other times for transportation, or food. However, it is only through face-to-face, in-the-spot conversations with these patients, and their caregivers, that we can make the best decision.

Somos Lara Kapps e Floor van Dommelen, duas estudantes de medicina da Universidade de Maastricht, na Holanda. Nos próximos meses realizaremos pesquisas sobre o HIV em Shashemene, uma cidade da Etiópia, na África.
Além de nossa contribuição, que se dará por meio desses estudos, queremos contribuir também de outra maneira com esses jovens pacientes, mulheres e famílias inteiras portadoras do vírus HIV. Queremos arrecadar dinheiro para aquisição de produtos que ajudem o maior número possível de famílias.
HIV (Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana)
O HIV continua sendo um grave problema de saúde pública global, tendo custado mais de 40,4 milhões de vidas até o momento. Até o final de 2022, estima-se que 39,0 milhões de pessoas vivam com o HIV, 2/3 das quais estão em regiões africanas. Na Etiópia, o HIV continua a afetar grande parte da população. Embora a terapia antirretroviral (ART) tenha ajudado a reduzir a morbidade e a mortalidade causadas pelo HIV, ela ainda não o erradicou. Pessoas continuam a sofrer suas consequências brutais todos os dias, que vão desde problemas de saúde, como ser mais suscetível a contrair outras doenças, até a discriminação e a estigmatização.
A Pesquisa
Cada uma de nós participará de projetos de pesquisa diferentes. A pesquisa da Floor analisará os determinantes epidemiológicos do HIV entre os jovens. É essencial que os adolescentes avaliem o contexto comportamental e psicossocial, bem como a capacidade de aderir à terapia antirretroviral (ART) para maximizar o sucesso a longo prazo, evitar falhas no tratamento e reduzir a morbidade e a mortalidade pelo HIV. Atualmente, há poucas evidências na Etiópia sobre a distribuição dos determinantes subjacentes dos resultados do tratamento do HIV em adolescentes. Nosso objetivo é mudar esse cenário com este estudo.
A pesquisa realizada por mim, Lara, abordará lesões cervicais pré-cancerosas em mulheres vivendo com HIV. Embora qualquer pessoa possa correr o risco de desenvolver câncer cervical, as mulheres com HIV têm seis vezes mais chances de desenvolvê-lo em comparação com mulheres saudáveis e, embora tratável, o câncer invasivo do colo do útero continua a ser uma das principais causas de morte entre as mulheres que vivem em países com recursos limitados. Portanto, este estudo não terá como objetivo apenas encontrar a prevalência de mulheres que vivem com HIV que também têm lesões pré-cancerosas no colo do útero, mas também se esforçará para encontrar indicadores de acesso precário à assistência médica, como o medo do diagnóstico, o estigma e a discriminação da família e da comunidade, entre outros.
Ambas as nossas pesquisas complementarão a pesquisa dos alunos de doutorado da Universidade de Hawassa: Habtemu Habu e Bikila Lencha, sob a supervisão de nosso supervisor na Universidade de Maastricht, Dr. Mark Spigt.
Para onde irá o dinheiro arrecadado?
O dinheiro doado por você será integralmente destinado a adolescentes, mães e famílias afetadas pela epidemia de HIV. Os pacientes com HIV na Etiópia são rapidamente vítimas do estigma e da discriminação relacionados ao HIV, do medo da rejeição familiar e/ou social, fazendo com que esses pacientes tenham uma maior prevalência de problemas de saúde mental e comportamental, abuso de substâncias e insegurança habitacional, incluindo falta de moradia e condições de vida instáveis.
Gostaríamos de tornar essa arrecadação de fundos o mais pessoal possível e, por esse motivo, queremos deixar que os próprios etíopes nos digam do que mais precisam. Como estaremos em contato próximo com os pacientes com HIV, gostaríamos de conversar pessoalmente sobre o que é mais necessário naquele momento. Às vezes, há necessidade de cobertores, outras vezes de transporte ou alimentos. No entanto, somente por meio de conversas presenciais, no local, com esses pacientes e seus cuidadores será possível tomar a melhor decisão.
