In this current pandemic crisis, these services are needed more than ever. More people are choosing to social distance outdoors, thus increasing the need for organized events in open green spaces. Hike to Yoga LA aims to be the catalyst for change, community and health.
Before the pandemic, these communities were already experiencing low levels of mental/physical health, and socioeconomic disadvantages.
Our programs are modeled from a National model of wellness, which emphasizes prevention, intervention, and sustainability. Our organization is focused on making yoga accessible to everyone, and fostering a sense of community among local residents. We focus on providing this service at no cost to an intergenerational population in Los Angeles County.
Social anxiety, loneliness, and lack of physical activity has risen as a result of COVID-19. One survey’s findings reported that 63% of Americans who have been previously diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder or depression are finding it hard to cope during the pandemic. While this is true for several populations such as adults, adolescents, and teens, one population that is often overlooked is adult seniors over the age of 65. While roughly 42.6 million older adults experience loneliness and social isolation, these conditions are associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and poor health outcomes. According to the Center for Disease Control, poor social relationships (characterized by social isolation or loneliness) was associated with a 29% increased risk of heart disease, a 32% increased risk of stroke, and a 50% increased risk of dementia.
Hike to Yoga LA will increase health literacy and raise awareness about how to manage and prevent stress, anxiety, and chronic disease. It will also prioritize the needs of adult seniors that are often overlooked because of barriers that prevent seniors from accessing preventative services.
