Climate change affects the world in countless ways.
For isolated communities in the North, this means that ice roads and winter roads used for travel are greatly affected by the shrinking cold season. For example, shipping groceries and household goods and fuel (for the diesel generators which provide power to these communities) is only possible on these roads for an ever shortening period of time.

Road access to the North is key to allowing a certain quality of life which many people, including myself, take for granted.
For several years, I have wondered how these communities will continue to survive, having their road access taken away from them.
Winter Road 900, August 2020, KM 15

Throughout my research, I have learned that the Northern Association of Community Councils (NACC) has launched several programs for the people of Brochet and other northern communities in Manitoba, in becoming more and more self-sufficient.
One example is the Northern Health Foods Initiative, which is designed to increase accessibility to healthy food in northern and remote Manitoba communities. Seeds of Change, tower gardening , beekeeping and composting are all programs within the initiative to promote sustainability. I was elated to see that there are people thinking about these issues and working hard to build lasting solutions. For that, I congratulate the NACC, their partners as well as the communities that make up the association. (Link to recent NHFI newsletter )
Here is how I want to help!
I have decided to hike 170 kilometers, from July 4th to 14th, up Winter Road 900, from Highway 394 (north of Lynn Lake, Manitoba) to Brochet, Manitoba to bring awareness to the issues surrounding isolated northern communities and the efforts of the NACC. All proceeds will be donated to the Northern Association of Community Councils in support of the Northern Health Foods Initiatives in Brochet, MB.

My goal is to provide indoor gardening equipment, such as towers gardens, to the Community of Brochet. This equipment will allow community members to have access to fresh, locally grown produce, all year round.

If you would like to know more about me and my hike to Brochet, I invite you to read pages 11 and 12 of the NACC Spring Newsletter .
Sincerely,
Daniel Couture
