High School in NYC
Donation protected
We are a high school in New York City serving newly arrived immigrant students from over 25 countries. For newly arrived immigrants, COVID-19 has been especially devastating. Our students come from all five boroughs and many families are facing food shortages, housing instability, and job loss. Our students and their family members worked at restaurants, grocery stores, and many other sites throughout NYC that have either closed or drastically reduced their staff size. Many of them do not qualify for unemployment, SNAP benefits, or the stimulus funds.
Some of things we have done to support these students and families during this time include:
Organizing, collecting, and delivering computers to students in their homes so they are able to do their classwork
Assisting with unemployment applications, SNAP applications, and emergency relief fund applications
Working with various organizations to deliver food to homes
Identifying resources in the community where families can go to for food
Collecting monetary donations among our staff to assist directly with financial needs
Working with sponsors and organizations to meet needs including diapers and wipes for infants and young children
We are constantly impressed by the level of commitment to their education that our students are displaying on a daily basis. Even during this pandemic, our students are showing up virtually, helping each other, and giving their best effort.
During this time, we have been reminded how important it is to stick together, support one another, and help in any way we can. We as a school community have really rallied together to ensure that needs are being met, high levels of learning are happening, and our sense of community is stronger than ever. Unfortunately, as needs continue to arise, the donations made by school staff are no longer sufficient. We appreciate anything you are able to donate to help support our community. The funds donated will be distributed directly to families to help them with pressing needs such as food, internet, diapers and baby wipes, and bills.
Thank you!
