Hi I’m Megan, I’m 15 years old and I have been given the opportunity to take part in an expedition to Borneo with my school, in July 2024. I will spend 4 weeks volunteering to improve the lives of some of the poorest communities, and helping to make a positive impact on their environment. Here are some examples of what I will be doing:
Habitat Conservation
I will be taking part in activities to safeguard Batu Puteh from deforestation, as it’s an incredible haven for a large majority of Borneos wildlife. It’s one of the worlds most important natural habitats, but also one of the most threatened.
Village Enhancement
I’ll be getting involved with a range of projects to improve facilities for the rapidly growing population of Bongkud, for example: constructing a youth centre, improving the drainage system to ensure cleaner and healthier living, and establishing a community farming programme, to improve food security and encourage self-sufficiency within the village, without needing to transport supplies from larger towns.
Ecotourism and recycling initiatives
I’ll work with a community recycling centre, giving local people a place to recycle waste, so it doesn’t end up lying on the beaches.
Community care construction
I will be getting involved in a long-term project to construct a community centre for the locals. These are an integral part of village life and are also a good indicator of the community’s health.
I am looking to raise funds for the travel and accommodation costs of £4750 to enable me to support the communities living in Borneo.
It is expected that I raise the money for my expedition by fundraising, so between now and my expedition I will be:
- Making and selling baked goods
- Selling handmade cards
- Creating fun activities for all pupils at my school
- Doing other paid work
I would really appreciate any support you are able to give, to help me fund my expedition.
Thank you very much, Megan x
