Heyes' Haven for Heroes Family Style Housing 4vets
Hello there, my name is Eileen Scanlon, and I am in the process of founding a non-profit named "Heyes' Haven for Heroes." I recently purchased a former tavern-turned home from the late 1700s. My goal is to offer safe, comfortable, beautiful housing to four/ five low-income veterans in this charming home. What could be better than a veteran coming home to a beautiful home with a stunning yard to like-minded peers? I can envision four/five veterans breaking bread together and kicking back watching TV together. This recently purchased home will become their home with affordable rent that will include electricity (until we are solar powered, yyyaaayyyy!!!), wifi, heat, three bathrooms, eat-in kitchen, a mini library area and extra room that might be lovely as a separate dining area or an extra room for an overnight guest, lots of storage, off-street parking for four vehicles and the most magical yard where they will have carte blanche to create their own garden and/or grow their own food.. I invite veterans to bring their voiceless companions with them or adopt one while they move in. Companion animals enrich our lives so much, therefore I have an open-door policy regarding small fur babies.
My aunt, Patricia Heyes Dokoudovsky (a world-renowned ballet dancer) passed away a year ago and I've decided to name this soon-to-be nonprofit after her... My aunt left me a bit of an inheritance which I used to purchase this fabulous home on 14 Linden Lane Hyde Park, NY. I've wanted to create an intentional community/house share for veterans for a few years and my aunt made this dream a reality. I believe in paying it forward at every single opportunity.
This home (Ruby's Whisper) will need quite a bit of work::: a new septic tank is a priority, the entire home had to be re-plumbed to adhere to code regulations (which is a current project), solar panels and siding for the home to lower our carbon footprint and keep costs to a minimum. I had to move forward with having the home re-plumbed asap, for obvious reasons, and I'm awaiting permits for the septic disaster to be rectified. I've called upon T. Webber re: plumbing and soon-to-be furnace update and Hopewell Septic for septic creation. Both companies have been fabulous, professional, timely and proactive.
I'm excited about this project because there is a current housing crisis regarding: veterans, and being the daughter of a veteran and having many friends/dear one's who've served, I feel obligated to put my aunt's blessings to proactive use for those who've served our country... PAY IT FORWARD AT EVERY GIVEN OPPORTUNITY is my philosophy.
Dutchess and Ulster County Veterans Administration is behind this project 1000%%%%; I'm determined to offer a most amazing living experience to our veterans. Dutchess County's surrounding areas have also been super supportive; dropping off much-needed gently used donations on the property of 14 Linden Lane Hyde Park, NY. Scanlon's Traveling Salon clients and dear ones are also sharing gently used household items so that veterans will have a completely furnished home.
I'm seeking $20,000 to offset funds that I will be matching to get this home in superior working order for our most excellent veterans.. Please check out my Scanlon's Traveling Salon FB page for progress on this home...
