Hertford College Charity Climb
Donation protected
We are a group of students at Hertford College, Oxford who are undertaking a 10-day climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with the Nasio Trust this August.
The Nasio Trust is an Oxfordshire-based NGO working in western Kenya to support children who have been affected by the HIV pandemic. The trust runs two purpose-built schools and a medical centre which supported over 11,000 patients in 2020 alone, including 465 births and the immunisation of nearly 3,200 babies. The Nasio Trust also works with communities to set up and run their own sustainable income-generating projects to generate long-lasting change. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the trust has provided essential care through their health clinic, collaborated with the Ministry of Health to aid data collection and provided vital sanitation education and resources. In the wake of school closures in Kenya, they also developed a community food program for children who usually rely on school meals.
The 10-day climb run by the trust begins in Tanzania, progressing through rainforest, moorland and tundra to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. We are really excited for the challenge and are eager to start training to make sure we're fully prepared. In the case that COVID-19 restrictions prevent us from undertaking the climb this summer, the Nasio Trust offers the flexibility to allow us to delay our climb until the next possible opportunity.
As students at Oxford, we are aware of the privilege this accords us with. In light of this, we are dedicated to ensuring our trip to Tanzania and Kenya is both sustainable and culturally sensitive. The Nasio Trust's established commitment to sustainable, long term support and deep respect for the agency of local communities assures us that our contribution can truly have a positive impact. We are also deeply excited to immerse ourselves in Tanzanian and Kenyan cultures by spending time with local communities and learning from them.
The anticipated breakdown of what your donation will be funding:
Charitable Donation: 1745x4
Kilimanjaro National Park Climbing Fees: 200x4
Compensation for Local Porters: 50x4
We will be self-funding all other elements of the trip ranging from flights to local transport and climbing equipment. If we manage to raise more than our target, all extra funds will go towards helping local communities in Tanzania.
