Help Us Preserve the Voices of Canada’s Cowboy Heritage
Across Canada, there are cowboys, horse trainers, and stockmen whose knowledge and stories were shaped by a lifetime on the land. Their experiences, lessons, and traditions are a vital part of Western culture and the backbone of our country. Unfortunately, many of these voices are fading with time.
The Heritage Cowboy Project was created to preserve those stories before they’re lost.
This project is a documentary-style interview series dedicated to recording the lives, experiences, poetry, and wisdom of Canadian cowboys and horse trainers. Our goal is simple: to capture their stories in their own words and share them with future generations.
What We’re Doing
For each cowboy we visit, we create:
• A short documentary film that captures the spirit of their life and work
• A full-length interview preserving their stories, knowledge, and memories in depth
These interviews are recorded on location — on ranches, in barns, and out where these men and women spent their lives working with horses and cattle.
Our first episode features Terry Milliken, who generously shared hours of stories and poems with us. It was an honour to sit down and listen to a lifetime of experiences that deserve to be remembered.
Why We Need Your Help
Documenting these stories takes time, travel, and equipment. Many of the cowboys we hope to interview live in rural areas, often hours apart.
Your support will help us cover:
• Travel to ranches and remote locations
• Filming and audio equipment
• Editing and post-production
• Archiving these stories so they are preserved long-term
• Producing future episodes in the series
Why This Matters
Western heritage is built on knowledge passed down from one generation to the next — often around kitchen tables, branding fires, and long days in the saddle. If we don’t record these stories now, many of them will disappear forever.
By supporting this project, you’re helping preserve a living piece of Canadian history.
How You Can Help
If you believe these stories deserve to be preserved, you can help by:
• Donating to support the project
• Sharing this campaign with others who value Western heritage
• Connecting us with cowboys, horse trainers, and storytellers whose voices should be recorded
Every contribution helps us keep these stories alive.
Thank you for helping us ensure that the voices of Canada’s cowboy heritage continue to be heard for generations to come.
