Help Preserve Henrietta Beauchamp Helm's Legacy
Donation protected
Henrietta Beauchamp Helm was a significant figure in education during the segregation era, dedicating her life to empowering her community and leaving a lasting legacy. Her mission was to make sure that working Black children and adults 14 years old and older could get an education.
Philip Cherry Sr., a professional actor, writer, director, producer, filmmaker, and educator, is seeking help from the community to create a documentary and a children's book about his great aunt Henrietta. The documentary, titled "Henrietta: A Segregation Era Educator," with the involvement of Philip's children and grandchildren, aims to tell the complete story of Henrietta. The documentary is being directed by, filmmaker, produced, actor and Louisville native, Shane Woodson who currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
The plantation where Henrietta used to reside as a slave is now owned by Senator Boswell, who has granted permission to film on-site. Philip Cherry Sr. also owns Henrietta's artifacts, some of which are on loan to the Filson Historical Society for preservation.
A mural of Henrietta can be found in downtown Louisville. In addition, a Henrietta Scholarship Fund has been established by the Community Foundation of Louisville, the University of Louisville, and the Christy Brown Foundation.
By donating to this project, you’re helping Henrietta's legacy as one of the first Black educators be accurately recorded for future generations as narrated by her descendants.
Thank you for your support!
