Help the Medlock Family

My name is Nancy Medlock, my husband Gary and I began this journey as foster parents about 6.5 years ago.  We have a true passion for helping others  and are committed to helping children and keeping sibling groups together. Gary is a carpenter and I am a CNA, specializing in special needs pediactrics. My childhood dream has always been to run an orphanage. Gary is a younger Mr. Rodgers, it's always a beautiful day in his neighborhood. He is exceptionally compassionate towards children. We make a good team. We firmly believe that if there is room in your heart there is room in your home. Because of that, we made the decision to foster a sibling group of 5 beautiful,  severely neglected and  abused  girls, ages 6 months to 10. We had already raised most of our brood of 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. Our youngest 2 were nearing the end of high school and we were about to become empty nesters. This new role didn't feel right. We didn't feel like we were done being parents. We learned there was a big need for foster homes and a dear pediatrician friend encouraged us to look into it. So we started the application processes to become foster parents. Our first placement was our girls.Their first night with us was a total chaotic whirlwind. They had nothing except for teddy bears the police officers gave to them. They were sick and petrified with little to no communication skills.  A nurse friend  helped us to stabalize them enough so they could attend school, most of them for the first time ever. They also each needed Physical therapy 2 x wk, Occupational Thereapy 1x per wk., Speech Thereapy 1x per wk and Play therapy 1x  per wk. Several had asthma and sever dental issues and a heart problem that required immediate attention. We had over 40 appointments a week! Six years later we still have a lot of appointments but their progress is extraordinary Their parents were convicted and sentenced to 25 years each in prison. Afterwhich the girls became eligible for adoption. We couldn't risk them being split up. They had already had so much loss. Some of their older relatives tried to adopt them but the court ruled against it because they needed intensive, medical and therapeudic care. Also, they wanted them to be in the same state as their older brother. He was staying in another therapeutic foster home because he was considered medically fragile. In December 2011 we gathered in the Colorado Springs Courthouse surrounded by friends, family, case workers, and police officers from their case,  and the judge pronounced the girls' new names( which they picked) and they were officially our daughters. The girls' biggest wish was to have their brother live with them. We were determined to make that happen. There were a lot of requirements we had to fulfill in order to make that happen. Our oldest son found a large home that was in  foreclosure in a small mountain town. However it needs LOTS of work to restore it. We were able to to bring their brother home two years ago. Our mission is to keep doing what we are doing and for this home to be a safe haven for the girls and their brother for as long and they need it. In order to provide that we need help.
