Maisie Wants To Play Too!

Maisie is a remarkable 9 year old girl with acute cerebral palsy meaning that she has limited movement, is partially deaf, blind and cannot communicate verbally.  However despite that she is very intelligent and can get her needs across and is able to make choices in a way her parents understand.   Maisie loves the outdoors and social interaction and would love  the opportunity to play alongside other children at a local park, however currently this simply isn't possible due to the lack of wheelchair friendly equipment.  Play is an important part of childhood development. When children are playing, they are able to progress language, symbolic thinking, social skills, and motor skills and play parks in particular are a great  place for children to engage with peers and make friends.  Sadly children with disabilities are  often, unintentionally, discriminated against in public parks and playgrounds and the play parks in and around Perth are  no exception. In fact according to Inclusive Play the nearest inclusive park able to accommodate Maisie's needs is Dunfermline, an approximate 30 mile drive!  As a result Maisie Moo Magical Moments, a small community group setup to raise money to buy toys and equipment for children with complex needs,  is currently working alongside Perth and Kinross Council to upgrade the play park at North Inch Play Park where nearby changing facilities and refreshments are available.  This includes the installation of a wheelchair friendly roundabout, trampoline, swing, tactile/sensory equipment, and upgrading ground works to ensure the equipment is universally accessible.

The project is being split into 2 phases;
Phase 1 - installation of wheelchair friendly equipment and improving access to the existing equipment - cost approx. £30,000
Phase 2 - installation of sensory/tactile equipment - cost approx. £30,000

All children and young people have the right to play and need to play. With your help and generosity Maisie and other children with disabilities can play too!  Please visit our facebook page for more information about our work.  Thank you for taking the time to visit our page.
