Help with housing for a mother

I'm writing to ask for help for a young woman and her 2-months-old who I met at church. I've left off her name, to protect her privacy.

L, a native of Haiti, traveled to the United States on February 6, 2016, using a Fiancée visa (or K-1 nonimmigrant visa) that permits a foreign national fiancée of a U.S. citizen to travel to the United States to marry the petitioning U.S. citizen sponsor within 90 days of admission to the country. In L’s case, the marriage ceremony took place in FL, March 12, 2016, before the given deadline. The policy on K-1 states: once you marry, your spouse may apply for permanent residence and remain in the United States while USCIS processes the application. However, L's then-husband didn’t apply for permanent residence on her behalf. Unfortunately, he drove her to a courtroom to sign her divorce without her consent following a dispute. She was kicked out while pregnant, and now her visa has expired and her ex-husband doesn't provide any support.

She was welcomed into the home of a local couple for a few months. Her baby was born here at DHMC with multiple birth defects. Now the couple's son & grandsons are moving in and they no longer have room to house L.

L must move out by December 15th. She and her two-month-old baby boy will be without a home and could end up homeless. We are writing to ask for your financial contribution to secure a lease for 12 months.

Please know that every little bit counts and can make a huge difference. Our goal is to raise enough money to cover rent & utilities for at least four months.

This Sunday at the First Congregational Church in Lebanon, NH, she stood up and gave a tearful plea for assistance to help find a place for her and her son to live. I was moved to do what I can to help, and so I have organized this site so that we can spread the word and find financial support in the community.

For L, it will mean a safe and comfortable home for her young family just in time for the holidays. It will mean not having to worry about where to lay her head so she can give all her attention and care to her son.

I am deeply appreciative to everyone for opening their hearts to someone in need.

Best Regards,

Erin Smith
