We are reaching out with urgency and humility to request support and prayers for a family in the NC commercial fishing industry. Early on the morning of May 12, 2026, tragedy struck when Mark, the owner and captain of the shrimp boat Lewis Boys, awoke to a fire onboard his 72’ shrimp trawler. We are so thankful that Mark was awoken and was able to make it off the boat that was gratefully docked at the time. Despite his efforts and the efforts of the fire department, the boat was a total loss.

For commercial fishermen, a boat is more than equipment. It’s their livelihood, their way of providing for their family, and in Mark’s case, a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice. The Lewis Boys was the family’s source of income.

Mark, a third generation commercial shrimper, and his wife Ashley are raising their two boys — Jacob (18), a recently recognized Eagle Scout (who is currently in basic training for the Army Reserves), and Walker (9). They are highly involved in Boy Scout Troop 252, where you can always find Ashley and her boys giving back selflessly to this community. They are truly “salt of the earth” in every sense of the phrase.

Right now they are facing the unimaginable. The fishing community knows that life can change quickly on the water, and they come together when adversity strikes. Most fishermen are unable to afford the astronomical insurance premiums needed to insure their vessels, just praying that they elude a tragic event such as this. Therefore, we are asking anyone who is able to please consider donating to help provide some financial relief during this devastating time.
