Helping My Parents: Sylvia and Richard

Donation protected
I've done a lot of fundraising in my life but never for my parents, so thank you for joining with me in this uncharted territory!

My mom and dad, Sylvia and Richard Duerr, are 91 and 89 years old respectively. Some of you know them as an aunt, uncle, friend, or neighbor -- they are both very dear people who have done their best to be kind human beings and good neighbors during their time on the planet.

Now they need a great deal of help -- getting old is not easy, and physically and cognitively they are at a point where much more support is needed. Most pressing right now, they need help to navigate the process of clearing their Pasadena, CA, home (filled with many many objects collected over the nearly 60 years they've lived there), preparing to sell their house, and moving to a more supported and safer living situation. My intention is to support them as best I can through this transition process, and during these years of being elders.

This is a huge transition, as you might guess.

One of the challenges right now is financial. Due to a number of causes and conditions, their financial resources are very limited -- though this will get significantly better with the sale of their house so that can have access to that equity.

As their only child, I have been spending a significant time over the past year trying to figure out the best way to move through this process, helping them get set up with services to support their current living situation, and researching options for their next steps.

Currently I am gathering the financial resources to help them make this move, and invite you to donate if you feel moved to support my parents (as well as me) during this stressful time.

Here’s what is needed:

* $4500 to cover the costs of the company that will clear and clean my parents’ house so it will be ready to go on the market. (The cost is actually quite a bit higher than this, but I am working on lining up a few short-terms loans that will cover the remaining portion of it, which will then be paid back after the sale of their house. I've done a lot of research and feel really good about this company, Clutter & Hoarding Pros, and their capacity to work with my parents in a compassionate way.)

* $500 to help cover other expenses incurred in this process, including some of my own travel back and forth to Pasadena so I can coordinate the decluttering and help them get moved. Over the past two years I've had to travel there quite a lot which has made a big dent in my own very modest budget. There are no other siblings involved and I don't have a partner, so this has fallen to me -- it's a responsibility I am honored to step into, but it's not been easy.

My hope is to raise this amount by August 1, in order to help them with a move into a supported living setting by the fall of 2019, so that their house can then be sold.

Beyond your financial contribution, your good wishes for my parents are really the most important thing you can offer!

If you would like to contribute to help make this move possible so that they can be in a better situation and relieve the current financial and other pressures they are under, please make a donation to this campaign. If you’d rather donate in a different way (mailing a check or sending via PayPal) please leave a comment below so I can contact you.

Thank you!
