Matt and Steve's Journey to Help the Unhoused –

The increasing number of people experiencing homelessness is a concerning issue that many communities are grappling with. Factors such as rising housing costs, economic instability, physical and mental health issues of individuals and other systemic issues contribute to the challenge of addressing homelessness.

The By Name List is a valuable tool for tracking and understanding the extent of homelessness in a specific area, in this case, in HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality). The fact that the list has surpassed 1,000 people highlights the urgency of finding effective and sustainable solutions to deal with homelessness in our community.

Addressing homelessness typically requires a multifaceted approach involving collaboration between government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups, and other stakeholders. Key elements of such strategies often include affordable housing initiatives, support services for mental health and addiction issues, employment assistance programs, and efforts to prevent homelessness in the first place.

Local governments and organizations may also collaborate to implement targeted interventions, such as providing temporary shelters, outreach programs, and support networks to help individuals transition from homelessness to stable housing.

It's crucial for communities to work together to address the root causes of homelessness and provide comprehensive support to those experiencing it. Advocacy, awareness, and resource allocation are essential components of a comprehensive strategy to combat homelessness and create lasting change in the lives of those affected.

Establishing their tent at the Halifax Grand Parade encampment in front of City Hall on November 18, 2023, Matt Grant and Steve Wilsack aimed to bring attention to the unhoused of Nova Scotia. In the initial two weeks following the onset of their initiative, supported by the generosity of samaritans, they successfully supplied individuals in need of shelter with robust ice fishing tents. These tents are designed to endure the elements more effectively than the standard tents commonly found in homeless encampments. Additionally, contributions from various donors have been used to procure essential items, including shelter enhancements, heat sources, and supplies for the residents.

In alignment with their mission, this GoFundMe page has been created to support Matt and Steve's initiative. The funds raised will be used for additional tents, food, water, propane, rain gear, snow shovels, blankets, volunteer stipends and other necessary supplies. This fundraising effort aims to further contribute to the ongoing efforts to address homelessness and enhance the well-being of those in need with a focus on the Grand Parade Square encampment.
