COVID-19-Helping The Elderly In Guatemala

Donation protected
Our goal is to help feed elder members of indigenous communities in Santo Tomas La Unión, Suchitepequez, Guatemala.

Within the local government of Santo Tomas La Unión, there is little to no help for their indigenous communities who often experience twice the pain of the difficult times. Additionally, there are no elderly care facilities and most people of old ages often live alone. Many are currently living in isolation with compromised immune systems, and many do not have the funds and/or ability to go out and purchase food.

Outraged by the weight of this injustice, a group of neighbors have decided to step in and create a local emergency food distribution service to help feed those experiencing hardship through these difficult times. With much effort and love for others, members of the community have contributed to the first wave of assistance. The first wave of food distribution contained basic items such as: rice, beans, sugar, cooking oil, coffee and toilet paper.  Each bag is valued at an equivalent of $8 USD or Q50.00 Quetzales (Guatemalan currency) and we are extremely grateful to have distributed 300 bags.

Although we were able to accomplish more than what we had originally thought to be possible, we are optimistic that we can help more families. At this time we are seeking funds to include even more necessary items, provide gas for the drivers, and cover other costs associated with delivering food to the members of our community at risk. We have planned to begin a second wave of distribution within the next couple of weeks, with the intentions to reach even more people than before.

Please consider donating to help alleviate some of the impacts COVID-19 on the people of Santo Tomas La Union. Know that $1 can make a difference to help us achieve our ultimate goal.

Also, take a minute to watch a video we have prepared to show how much these amazing community members appreciate the help and efforts.

My name is Anthony Azanon and I am doing this on behalf of Javier Estraube and Nancy Guillén who are the organizers of the community outreach.
