Hello. My name is Renee King from Hustonville, KY. My husband, Donnie King, and I have been blessed for the last 8 years to be running Turnersville Christian Mission, which is a faith-based volunteer homeless mission. We both quit our jobs 8 years ago when God called us to this mission to run it. It is our life. Since that time, we have grown and made changes, praise be to God, through our donors and support group!
We have been housing an average of 70 people: men, women, children, elderly, and sick for the past 3 years, with sometimes 80 or more during the winter months. Many people from the streets have come to know Christ as their Savior here because we also preach the word of God here. Our county and so many others in and out of state have utilized us for placing the homeless. We are not like your ordinary shelter. Everything and everyone is completely volunteer. We have not had any grants or any other form of government help. No one gets paid. We do this out of the love of Christ and others.
But after almost 8 years of up and running with hundreds of people off the streets, the state came in and said we need to get up to code. So, we had to displace 50 people within a few days and temporarily close the mission. We are still having church services but are not able to house anyone until we are up to code. This will take a lot to do: new wiring, foundations for the cabins, and several other things. We are not sure of the total cost yet because we still need plans drawn up to turn in. Also, at the same time, we need to keep our present bills paid. So, we are needing major help with the cost of upgrading the grounds. We do have an architect, contractor, electrician, and plumbers in place to volunteer their work. We just need to purchase the materials.
This mission is a temporary home for lots of people, especially through the winter months, so we are trying to finish all this before the cold sets in. If you can help in any way possible, it would be greatly appreciated, and I’m sure God will bless you for it. We have a goal set, but anything and everything helps. Please pass the word and the link. Pray for this mission and all involved to quickly get back running. Thank you all who help. $5 or $500, whatever you can do! We are totally community funded.
We do have a Facebook page, Turnersville Mission. Please look us up for more info and updates.
