Home Repairs for USMC Peter Wasilewski

Tax deductible

Peter Wasilewski was born and raised in Wayne County, Michigan. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968 and was on his way to Vietnam in 1969. After a 13 month combat deployment, in which he was awarded several ribbons and medals, Peter was on his way home. Upon completion of his duty, Peter separated from service in 1972 with an honorable discharge.

Due to complications faced later in life, in relation to Agent Orange exposure during his tour in Vietnam, Peter was faced with amputation and ultimately bound to a wheelchair.
His current accommodations are inadequately accessible and the space is in need of a revision. Options and available resources from the VA are limited, so Peter and his wife Liz had settled into the difficulties of their situation.

THE PROJECT
BATHROOM REMODEL - SEPTEMBER 2022

We’re first increasing the accessibility of Peter's existing bathroom. This includes widening the entry and removing existing partitions. We’re completely remodeling the space to include a barrier-free shower with bench and grab bars, a wheelchair accessible vanity, and all new fixtures, finishes and surfaces. We’re sealing the deal with some bright lighting, adequate ventilation, fresh paint, and window treatment.

KITCHEN REMODEL
Next, we’re making an attempt at a light kitchen surface remodel. Peter and Liz’s kitchen is outdated and in disrepair, due to previous unfinished work by others. An improved space would be a gift for both Peter, as well as Liz, his wife, who cares for him day in and day out. While the kitchen project is currently a wish list item, the goal is to install new kitchen cabinetry, with solid surface countertops, new fixtures, appliances, lighting and flooring.

DECK RENOVATION
Also a wish list item, a new deck surface and rails. Peter spends much of his time outdoors, on the deck at his home. His current deck, is treated lumber, and has certainly seen better days, deterioration in the deck boards could lead to an unsafe surface for a wheelchair. A composite lumber deck would require much less maintenance and upkeep, therefore giving Peter and his wife a quality outdoor space, less the burden, for many years to come.
