The story of Zion, as told by his mom Gabriela:
Zion - our beloved son, was born as a beautiful and healthy baby boy, in the town of Janik in a small central European country called Slovakia.
After a while, we noticed that something was not right with his legs (he couldn’t move them more than a little and wasn’t able to lift them).
Zion's head began to fall - as if he couldn't hold it. The neurologist's suspicion that our son has muscle atrophy was confirmed by blood tests.
Our world has collapsed - the diagnosis of Werdnig Hoffman SMA TYPE 1 was confirmed - when Zion was sick with pneumonia for a year and a half, he was literally fighting for his life.
The doctors decided to take a radical step, did a tracheotomy, which meant that he needed to be attached to pulmonary ventilation and he was given food trough a tube in his nose.
He was hospitalized for two months at the intensive care unit in the city of Kosice, Slovakia, where they had to adjust his breathing apparatus.
When he returned home, everything changed. We couldn’t just go for a walk as before, because of all the medical equipment that we needed to carry (breathing apparatus, suction pump, oximeter, oxygen tank).
The doctors gave him three years of life - he is now ten and he is still fighting and despite the difficult journey - we are not giving up.
We were fortunate to have another baby - his sister Zoe, who is fortunately completely healthy. Together we are trying to provide him with all the necessary care that he needs and it’s quite financially demanding: medical devices, drugs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, hygiene supplies, medical and nursing supplies.
Not all of his medical needs are covered by our medical insurance so we are highly dependent on the help of good people.
We believe that with your help we will succeed. He is our teacher of life, taught us great humility and to see the world from a different perspective. He drew a lot of faithful and caring people into our lives.
