Help with the Care of My Mother – Relief for My Father

My name is Nara, I am a cultural worker based in Berlin – and an only child. I need your support to ensure my mother’s care at home. She has Machado-Joseph disease (SCA3), a rare, degenerative, and progressive neurological condition that affects coordination and movement. She can no longer walk, has lost her fine motor skills, and requires 24/7 assistance. My nearly 80-year-old father, despite his own health issues (diabetes, coronary heart disease, neuropathy, and vision problems), has been her primary caregiver for over a decade. But his strength is failing.

While my mother has the highest level of care classification (Pflegegrad 5), financial support for in-home care is far too low. The care system overwhelmingly favors nursing homes over enabling families to care for loved ones at home. We urgently need 5 additional hours of daily care to support my father.

The cost breakdown:

5 hours per day × €14.15 per hour = €70.75 per day

€70.75 per day × 90 days (3 months) = approx. €6,400

These additional hours are crucial to ensuring my mother’s care while I recover from surgery and to providing vital relief for my father.

Our care system does not work – it puts too much pressure on families while offering little support. But with your help, my mother can continue to receive care at home, as she wishes.

Hallo, mein Name ist Nara, ich bin Kulturschaffende*r aus Berlin und Einzelkind. Meine Mutter hat Machado-Joseph (SCA3), eine seltene, fortschreitende neurologische Erkrankung, die Koordination und Bewegung beeinträchtigt. Sie kann nicht mehr laufen, hat keine Feinmotorik mehr und braucht rund um die Uhr Unterstützung. Mein fast 80-jähriger Vater, selbst gesundheitlich angeschlagen, hat sich seit über einem Jahrzehnt um sie gekümmert, doch er braucht dringend Entlastung.

Ich selbst bin verletzt, brauche eine Operation und kann momentan nicht bei der Pflege helfen.

Obwohl meine Mutter Pflegegrad 5 hat, reicht die finanzielle Unterstützung für ambulante Pflege nicht aus. Unser Pflegesystem bevorzugt Pflegeheime, anstatt Familien zu unterstützen. Wir benötigen dringend 5 zusätzliche Stunden tägliche Pflege.

Kostenaufstellung:

5 Stunden pro Tag × 14,15 € = 70,75 € pro Tag

70,75 € × 90 Tage = ca. 6.400 €

Embora minha mãe tenha o nível mais alto de assistência (Pflegegrad 5), o apoio financeiro para cuidados domiciliares é insuficiente. O sistema privilegia asilos em vez de ajudar as famílias. Precisamos urgentemente de 5 horas adicionais de assistência por dia para aliviar meu pai.

Mi padre, que tiene casi 80 años y enfrenta problemas de salud, ha sido su principal cuidador durante más de una década, pero necesita apoyo para poder seguir brindándole el cuidado necesario. Yo misma estoy lesionada, necesito una cirugía y, en este momento, no puedo ayudar.

Aunque mi madre tiene el nivel más alto de asistencia (Pflegegrad 5), el apoyo financiero para los cuidados en casa es insuficiente. El sistema prioriza las residencias en lugar de ayudar a las familias cuidar a sus entes queridos en casa. Necesitamos urgentemente 5 horas adicionales de asistencia diaria para aliviar a mi padre.
